【摘要】:p>Theinformationgainedthroughthesiteinvestigationisusedtocharacterizethephysical,biological,andchemicalsystemsexistingatasite.Theprocessesthatdeterminecontaminantreleases,contaminantmigration,andenvironmentalreceptorexposuretocontaminantsaredescribedandintegratedinaconceptualsitemodel.Developmentofthismodeliscriticalfordeterminingpotentialexposureroutes(forexample,ingestionandinhalation)andforsuggestingpossibleeffectsofthecontaminantsonhumanhealthandtheenvironment.Uncertaintiesassociatedwiththeconceptualsitemodelneedtobeidentifiedclearlysothateffortscanbetakentoreducetheseuncertaintiestoacceptablelevels.Earlyversionsofthemodel,whichareusuallybasedonlimitedorincompleteinformation,willidentifyandemphasizetheuncertaintiesthatshouldbeaddressed.Theconceptualsitemodelisusedtointegrateallsiteinformationandtodeterminewhetherinformationincludingdataaremissing(datagaps)andwhetheradditionalinformationneedstobecollectedatthesite.Themodelisusedfurthermoretofacilitatetheselectionofremedialalternativesandtoevaluatetheeffectivenessofremedialactionsinreducingtheexposureofenvironmentalreceptorstocontaminants.Thisguideisnotmeanttoreplaceregulatoryrequirementsforconductingenvironmentalsitecharacterizationsatcontaminated(includingradiologicallycontaminated)sites.Itshouldsupplementexistingguidanceandpromoteauniformapproachtodevelopingconceptualsitemodels.Thisguideismeanttobeusedbyallthoseinvolvedindevelopingconceptualsitemodels.Thisshouldideallyincluderepresentativesfromallphasesoftheinvestigativeandremedialprocess,forexample,preliminaryassessment,remedialinvestigation,baselinehumanhealthandecologicalriskassessments,andfeasibilitystudy.Theconceptualsitemodelshouldbeusedtoenableexpertsfromalldisciplinestocommunicateeffectivelywithoneanother,resolveissuesconcerningthesite,andfacilitatethedecision-makingprocess.Thestepsintheprocedurefordevelopingconceptualsitemodelsincludeelementssometimesreferredtocollectivelyassitecharacterization.Althoughnotwithinthescopeofthisguide,theconceptualsitemodelcanbeusedduringsiteremediation.1.1Thisguideisintendedtoassistinthedevelopmentofconceptualsitemodelstobeusedforthefollowing:(1)integrationoftechnicalinformationfromvarioussources,(2)supporttheselectionofsamplelocationsforestablishingbackgroundconcentrationsofsubstances,(3)identifydataneedsandguidedatacollectionactivities,and(4)evaluatetherisktohumanhealthandtheenvironmentposedbyacontaminatedsite.Thisguidegenerallydescribesthemajorcomponentsofconceptualsitemodels,providesanoutlinefordevelopingmodels,andpresentsanexampleofthepartsofamodel.Thisguidedoesnotprovideadetaileddescriptionofasite-specificconceptualsitemodelbecauseconditionsatcontaminatedsitescanvarygreatlyfromonesitetoanother.1.2Thevaluesstatedineitherinch-poundorSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.1.3Thisguideisintendedtoapplytoanycontaminatedsite.1.4Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
